Τις περισσότερες φορές ένα αριστούργημα φτιάχνεται μέσα σε ελάχιστο χρόνο.
Τούτο δω χρειάστηκε μόλις δύο μέρες : 15 και 16 του Ιούνη 1965 στα στούντιο της Columbia στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Την πρώτη μέρα, ηχογραφήθηκαν πέντε διαφορετικές εκτελέσεις μέχρι ο Dylan να καταλήξει στην τελική 6 λεπτών και κάτι εκτέλεση. Οι υπόλοιπες (η μία καλύτερη από την άλλη) δυστυχώς χάθηκαν, εκτός από μία, που μπορεί κάποιος να την ακούσει στο The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991 (εσείς ακούστε το εδώ), άλμπουμ που περιλαμβάνει πολλές ακυκλοφόρητες εκτελέσεις τραγουδιών του.
Η ιστορία θέλει το διαμάντι αυτό να συλλαμβάνεται τυχαία στο μυαλό του Dylan, μια μέρα που καθόταν στο πιάνο και να προέρχεται από μία συλλογή στίχων του που ξεπερνούν τις δέκα σελίδες και που ποτέ δεν είχε σκεφτεί να μελοποιήσει.
Διασκευάστηκε άπειρες φορές, με καλύτερη μέχρι σήμερα αυτή των Rolling Stones, οι οποίοι κράτησαν το ίδιο ακριβώς tempo χωρίς ν'αλλάξουν ούτε μία νότα. Αυτό κάποιοι το λένε και απόλυτο σεβασμό.
Το single κυκλοφόρησε στις 20 Ιούλη 1965 ενώ το τραγούδι αποτέλεσε το πρώτο hit του έκτου κατά σειρά δίσκου του Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited.
Για όσους κρατούν στατιστικά, είναι στο Νο1 του TOP-500 songs του περιοδικού Rolling Stone Magazine και σίγουρα όχι μόνο λόγο τίτλου.
